Andhra Pradesh is the fifth largest State in India with 23% of the land area under forests which is equal to the National level. The forest types range from coastal swamps to moist evergreen patches inhabiting variety of fauna. The preservation of the Biodiversity is the call of the day and efforts are underway in several spheres towards this direction. Public cooperation is the need of the hour.- Rooting of Stem Cuttings of Avicennia officinalis.Linn. And Avicennia alba BL. : a Tool for Afforestation of Blanks in Mangrove Forests

Mangroves are self maintaining estuarine components of the biosphere that are in continuous interaction with the terrestrial and marine-ecosystems. Vegetative propagation by ischolar_maining of stem cuttings of Avicennia species, one of the most important genera of the Godavari mangroves using ischolar_main hormones IAA and IBA has been tried. The cuttings of Avicennia officinalis and Avicennia alba showed a good response in producing the ischolar_mains with IBA 5000ppm followed by IBA 10000 ppm, IAA 5000 ppm and IAA 10000 ppm.- Rooting Experiments of Stem Cuttings of Stercula urens, Roxb.

Sterculia urena yields 'Gum karaya' which was used in many industries like Cosmetics, Pharamaceuticals etc. Terminal and middle cuttings were treated with ischolar_maining hormone Indole-3 Butyric Acid at 4000 ppm and 5000 ppm concentrations. ischolar_maining of cuttings was observed after 28 days In both these concentrations. No ischolar_maining was observed in the control.- Biotechnological Approach for Tree Improvement in Red Sanders

Red Sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus Linn.) is an endemic species to Cuddapah geological formation. The heartwood of the tree is costliest and is being exported to Japan. Andhra Pradesh Forest Department has launched tree improvement programme to improve the quality of Red Sanders populations by multiplying desired superior phenotypes. The problems faced in standardising the techniques and the importance of Biotechnological approach for realising the objectives of the programme have been discussed. The advantages and procedures adopted in tissue culture and ischolar_maining the cuttings of Red Sanders are described. The scope for utilising the techniques for the tree improvement of Red Sanders for multiplication and production of F1 hybrids is discussed.- Forestry Research in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh with a forest cover of 23% of geograpbical area is rich in variety of flora and fauna. Forestry Research in Andhra Pradesh started as early as 1920. A forestry research programme has been finalised as per the current needs and priorities. Priority area of Research have been identiflad and a brief account of research activities taken up under each topic are discussed. The Progress made in Tree Improvement Research and Vegetative Propagation including Tissue Culture is discussed in tbe paper.- Vegetative Propagation of Red Sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus Linn.)

Ptrocarpus sanlalinus an endemic species to the region of Cuddapah geological formation is highly valued due to its export potential to Japan. The choice of the Japanese is for its sound wavy grained logs. The forest department of Andhra Pradesh tried for propagation of the species vegetatively by means of ischolar_mained cuttings, air layering and grafting. The present paper analyses the grafting, air layering and ischolar_maining experiment conducted in the past. The results indicate that the technique of grafting has limited scope in large scale propagation of the species. Similarly air layering has got its own limitations and requires further standardisation. Rooting of cuttings offers great scope in propogating the elite trees on a large scale vegetatively. For propagation of the species by adopting tissue culture technology has great potential and efforts are also on way to utilise this technique for establishing clonal seed orchards in Andhra Pradesh.- Rooting of Terminal Cuttings in Tamarindus indica Linn
